Letters of Saint John Eudes

Written for his fellow priests, religious women, and friends, these letters reveal a spirituality shaped by the encounters and trials of daily life. They invite us to grow in trust in the Hearts of Jesus and Mary, nurture our inner life, let Jesus live within us, and welcome the Holy Spirit.

The Vow of Martyrdom

This manuscript, dated March 25, 1637 and signed in the blood of Saint John Eudes, is kept at the Sisters of Our Lady of Charity of the Good Shepherd in Cormelles-le-Royal.

Read the prayer

O most loving Jesus, I adore and glorify you countless times for the most painful martyrdom you endured in your Passion and on the cross.

I adore and bless you as best I can in your state as offering and victim in the Blessed Sacrament of the altar, where you are continually offered for the glory of your Father and out of love for us.

I honor and revere you in the great suffering your holy Mother endured at the foot of your cross. I praise and magnify you in the many martyrs among your saints, who endured such terrible torments out of love for you.

I adore and bless all the thoughts, purposes, and infinite love you have had from all eternity for all the blessed martyrs who have lived since the beginning and who will live in your holy Church until the end of the world.
